The thesis will be presented by Mrs. Salwa EL BAAKILI on the topic:
“ Electrophoretic Deposition of a Novel Bioactive Glass on
Dense and Porous Metal Implants for Bone Tissue Applications ”

Abstract

This study emphasizes the critical role of the implant-bone interface in ensuring implant stability, durability, and integration. The process involves the migration and differentiation of osteogenic cells, leading to new bone formation. To address challenges like implant instability and corrosion, bioactive coatings on metallic substrates are explored. The coatings aim to increase bioactivity, stimulate bone growth, and protect against corrosion and mechanical mismatches. In this thesis, bioactive glass (BG) coatings on 3D printed stainless steel 316L parts were achieved using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Various BG compositions were synthesized and characterized, with promising results in terms of bioactivity and drug release. The incorporation of ion dopants and the use of chitosan as a polymer matrix further enhanced the coatings' properties. Overall, the research showcases the potential of EPD in producing composite coatings with improved biological and anti-corrosive properties for biomedical applications.
