”Design and 3D-Additive Manufacturing of a New

Generation of Bioactive Coated Porous Metal Implants for Medical

Application”

Abstract

Despite the widespread use of metal implants in medical and orthopedic surgery, long-term in vivo application was limited due to implant degradation and bonding mismatch, as identified. The current thesis proposes addressing these limitations by enhancing implant interfacial surface, promoting faster bone regeneration and bioactivity, and improving biocorrosion resistance. A lightweight, porous metallic implant coated with bioactive glass was produced to achieve the proliferation of osteogenic cells and stimulate new bone growth and structural bonding mismatch. The bioactive glass has shown the ability to impregnate antibacterial and therapeutic agents essential for osteointegration with the host organ. The results confirmed the formation of a bonelike layer on the implant surface, along with enhanced biocorrosion resistance.
This approach via surface modification was revealed to hold significant promise and is efficacious in improving the longevity of orthopedic implants.
