“ ADVANCED CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR BLOOD GLUCOSE REGULATION IN TYPE 1 DIABETES: TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ARTIFICIAL PANCREAS ”

Summary

This thesis focuses on improving blood glucose management in individuals with Type 1 Diabetes, especially during meal-induced disturbances. The research centers on developing and optimizing advanced control systems for artificial pancreas technology to ensure precise and automated insulin delivery.

A key contribution of the work is the design of a fuzzy logic controller (FLC), enhanced using genetic algorithms (GA), to effectively regulate glucose levels after meals. Simulations carried out in MATLAB/Simulink tested the controller across various patient scenarios, demonstrating superior performance compared to conventional methods. In particular, the FLC maintained glucose within the recommended range more effectively than traditional strategies like Internal Model Control (IMC) and Multi-objective output feedback techniques.

Additionally, a comparative study was conducted evaluating several established controllers such as PID, RST, SPC, and SFC based on performance metrics like time in range and stability. The PID controller stood out for its consistency in keeping glucose levels near optimal levels.

Overall, the findings offer valuable insights into developing more adaptive and reliable insulin delivery systems and contribute to the ongoing advancement of artificial pancreas solutions for personalized diabetes management.
