The thesis will be presented by Mr. Mohamed Amine El Amrani under the topic: “Artificial Intelligence and Decision-Support Optimization for Sustainable Urban Logistics: Freight-Public Transport Integration in Casablanca.”
Thesis Summary
Urban freight keeps shops and businesses supplied, but delivery vehicles also add pressure to busy roads and contribute to transport emissions. This thesis examines freight mobility in Casablanca and how it can be better considered in sustainable transport planning, including the possible role of tramways in parcel delivery.
Drawing on existing research and city-network modeling, the thesis uses PTV VISUM’s Simulation-Based Dynamic Assignment (SBA) to model business-to-business delivery vans and assess vehicle travel, delays, and recurring bottlenecks. HBEFA emission factors are used to estimate road-transport emissions. An AI-based routing model using Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) explores parcel journeys that combine road travel with tramway transfers while accounting for changing travel times.
The simulations show how higher assumed freight demand affects vehicle travel and delays, and identify recurring pressure points in the network. In the routing experiments, options with tramway access produced higher mean training rewards and more stable learning within the model. Together, the findings provide evidence and methods to inform future planning and testing of how urban deliveries might work alongside public transport.
