Miguel Ángel Moratinos Cuyaubé, United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations

As part of the 9th World Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations which is being held in Fez (UNAOC) from November 21 to 24, Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos Cuyaubé visited the UEMF on the occasion of the forum of young people which took place at the Euromed University of Fez on the sidelines of this event.
Mr. Moratinos Cuyaubé devoted his professional and political career to international relations and development cooperation, having notably served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (2004-2010), chairing the United Nations Security Council and held the current presidencies of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the Council of Europe and the Council of the European Union.
Mr. Moratinos Cuyaubé also held several positions at the national level, including those of Deputy Director General for North Africa (1987-1991), Director of the Institute for Cooperation with the Arab World (1991-1993) and Director General for foreign policy in Africa and the Middle East (1993-1996). He also participated in the organization, in 1992, of the Madrid Conference for Peace in the Middle East.
He began his diplomatic career as Head of the Coordination Section for Eastern Europe (1977-1980). He was then appointed First Secretary then Chargé d'affaires of the Spanish Embassy in the former Yugoslavia (1980-1984), then Political Advisor in Morocco (1984-1987). After having been, in 1996, Ambassador of Spain to Israel, Mr. Moratinos Cuyaubé was appointed, by the European Union, Special Representative for the peace process in the Middle East (1996-2003), position during which he promoted peace agreements and acted, on behalf of the European Union, to promote Arab-Israeli dialogue.
