Over the last two millennia, human knowledge has gradually split into two distinct branches: on the one hand the so-called 'hard' sciences, with physics as a paradigm, and on the other the so-called human sciences, such as sociology. or anthropology. This separation, undoubtedly necessary for reasons of efficiency, has had serious, perhaps even disastrous, consequences, especially in the Arab world. The purpose of this conference is to explain why, then to plead for a review of scientific education programs: the 'humanities' must feature prominently alongside the hard sciences, even in engineering schools.
