The thesis defense will take place on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at 2:30 PM at UEMF
The thesis will be presented by Mr. David Bahati On the theme:
“HYBRID BIOACTIVE MATERIALS FOR BONE TISSUE ENGINEERING”
This thesis explores artificial materials for regenerating bone defects in the human jawbone, also known as dental or alveolar bone. Pathologies affecting this bone, such as periodontitis, a chronic bacterial infection impacting gums and dental bone, can lead to tooth loss and severe dental issues, affecting 20- 50% of the global population.The thesis first focuses on synthesizing mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) doped with therapeutic metallic ions as alternatives to natural bone grafts. The MBGNs are then involved in developing multifunctional bioresorbable electrospun fibrous bioactive membranes for guided bone/tissue regeneration, incorporating strontium-doped MBGNs. The membranes exhibited promising properties for guided bone and tissue regeneration, showing well- dispersed bioactive glass nanoparticles, in vitro apatite formation, and sustained drug release when loaded with ibuprofen. The membranes also demonstrated excellent in vitro biocompatibility evaluated through cell adhesion, viability, and proliferation capabilities.
