Low-Temperature Development of Novel Hybrid Materials Based on Calcium Phosphates, Biopolymers, and Bioactive Glasses for Medical Applications

In response to the growing demand for innovative biomedical solutions for bone and dental tissue repair and regeneration, the development of new bioactive, biocompatible, and high-performance biomaterials is a major focus of current research. Calcium phosphates, particularly apatites, are widely recognized for their chemical and structural similarity to natural bone mineral, while biopolymers provide excellent biocompatibility and high shaping flexibility.

This PhD project aims to develop, at low temperature, innovative hybrid materials combining calcium phosphates, natural and/or synthetic biopolymers, and bioactive glasses. The goal is to design multifunctional composites with enhanced physicochemical, mechanical, and biological properties, suitable for medical applications such as bone regeneration, biomedical cements, bone substitutes, and dental applications.

Research environment

Candidates are expected to carry out their research full-time within the structures of the Euromed University of Fes.

PhD Student’s Responsibilities

  • Material Synthesis: Low-temperature preparation of calcium phosphates (hydroxyapatite, substituted calcium phosphates, etc.) and their combination with biopolymers and bioactive glasses to design hybrid materials.
  • Shaping and Functionalization: Development of composites and biomedical cements, control of microstructure, porosity, and physicochemical properties of the developed materials.
  • Physicochemical and Structural Characterization: Study structural, morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties using appropriate techniques (XRD, FTIR, SEM, thermal analyses, etc.).
  • Biological Performance Evaluation: Study bioactivity, biocompatibility, and in vitro behavior of materials for medical and dental applications.

Candidate profile

  • Academic background in materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of or interest in biomaterials and calcium phosphate-based materials.
  • Experience in materials characterization and/or biopolymers is an asset.
