SmartLeaf: An Embedded AI-Based Mobile System for Climate-Resilient Plant Stress and Disease Detection in Sustainable Agriculture
This PhD project focuses on developing an embedded and mobile AI system for detecting plant diseases and climate-induced stresses from smartphone images. It aims to design a lightweight deep learning models (such as MobileNet or EfficientNet-Lite) that can run efficiently on mobile devices. The models will be deployed through an Android application operating offline, ensuring accessibility in rural areas. The system will provide real-time diagnosis and context-aware recommendations for sustainable farming. By integrating computer vision and edge AI, the project promotes affordable precision agriculture. It targets smallholder farmers facing limited resources and connectivity challenges. Ultimately, the project supports climate-resilient and sustainable food production.
Candidates are expected to carry out their research full-time within the structures of EUROMED University.
• Develop image processing and deep learning algorithms for disease and stress detection.
• Deploy the trained models on mobile devices using TensorFlow Lite.
• Design an intuitive Android application for farmers.
• Contribute to scientific publications and project dissemination.
Master’s degree or Engineering diploma in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Embedded Systems. Strong skills in Python, CNNs, and image processing; experience in Android development is a plus. High motivation for sustainable agriculture and applied AI research.
