Can regional economic agreements constitute the basis of more just and inclusive multilateral economic governance?

RIEMAS Webinars

The UEMF and its components Euromed Business School and RIEMAS (Research Institute for Euro-Mediterranean and African Studies) are organizing a webinar on 03/23/2021 under the theme:

“Can regional economic agreements constitute the basis of more just and inclusive multilateral economic governance?”

After having experienced dazzling growth, driven and regulated by international institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), world trade has shown disappointing performance since the financial crisis of 2008. The WTO scenarios anticipate a clear contraction in global trade from 13% to 32% for 2020 due to the global health crisis.

In addition to the upheavals of the subprime economic crisis, it is in reality the political project of a happy globalization which is today being rethought. With the rise of certain protectionist practices, many countries have demonstrated their distancing from the rules that govern the global functioning of trade, thus highlighting the crisis of multilateralism.

Today, the international community places a lot of hope in the new American administration and in the appointment of Ms. Ngozi-Okonjo-Iweala as head of the WTO. The expectation of a new lease of life for the action of the WTO and its bodies has never been so significant in revitalizing commercial multilateralism.

The objective of this webinar is to address the question of the renewal of economic multilateralism by combining the views of economic actors, government officials and academics.

- 7 nationally and internationally renowned Speakers share their ideas around the following questions:

What best practices can the multilateral governance system learn from regional experiences?
What mechanisms to build an inclusive and fair multilateral system?
What place for questions of investment, competition and finance in the new North-South economic agreements?
In this context, what are the prospects for Euro-Med-Africa relations? and what role for Morocco?
What place for themes such as education, health, food, green growth and digital?
