Water resources under global changes: lessons from Morocco

Cycle of conferences

Pr. Lhoussaine BOUCHAOU led a conference at the Euromed Polytechnic School (EPS) on the impact of climate change on water resources by illustrating it through case studies applied to the Moroccan context.

Previously, Professor BOUCHAOU gave an overview of the existing water resources in Morocco, focusing on the water cycle and linking it to the climate context of the country in order to introduce the problem of water stress, as well as the necessary characteristics of a balanced integrated water management process. He then mentioned the research structures dealing with water at the national level, as well as certain development projects in progress. Our speaker closed his seminar by detailing different research topics including :

  • Climate processes and atmospheric circulation;
  • Snow dynamics in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains;
  • Groundwater dynamics and water quality;
  • Agricultural water management: water saving techniques.

Dr. Lhoussaine Bouchaou has completed his PhD at the age of 27 years from University of Franche-Comté (France) in 1988 and Doctorate of state from University of Cadi Ayyad (Morocco) in 1995. He is a senior professor at Ibn Zohr University of Agadir (Morocco) since 1995. His research is focusing mainly on “contribution of environmental chemical and isotopic tracers for water resources management in semi-arid areas, salinity of water and soil, karst hydrology, environment, climate change, and its impact on natural resources in arid zones”.  He is leader of several national and international research contracts (EU, IAEA, UNESCO, NATO, EU, CNRS, CNRST, IRD, ABH, ACADEMIE Hassan II, OCP, PRIMA...) since 1990s and supervisor of about 30 PhD students, including 5 at UM6P since 2020.

He has published more than 100 papers in high indexed journals, serving as reviewer member of repute journal and international expert in water resources topic. He was former president of Moroccan chapter of International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) from 2003 to 2016. He is also an affiliated professor to International Water Research Institute (IWRI) of University Mohamed 6 Polytechnic (UM6P) at Benguérir (Morocco) since July 2019.
